Benefits of Sauna
Explore what research suggests, understand its limits, and learn how to enjoy the heat thoughtfully.
What the research suggests
The evidence is interesting, but it is not a promise. Different studies measure different outcomes, populations, and patterns of use.
◌
Sauna alongside exercise
A small eight-week randomized trial involving 47 adults found improvements in some cardiovascular measures with exercise plus sauna compared with exercise alone.
Limit: This does not show that sauna replaces exercise or that one session produces lasting benefits.
✦
Brain health
A 2017 observational study linked more frequent sauna use with lower dementia incidence in the Finnish men studied.
Limit: This does not prove sauna prevents dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
Promising research is not a personal guarantee.
Study populations, sauna types, and patterns of use differ. Long-term habitual-use findings do not establish benefits from one rental session. Several Finnish observational studies share an underlying cohort and are not completely independent confirmations.
Research reviews
Research reviews help readers understand the broader evidence. A 2018 systematic review found that many studies were small and called for more research.

Your sauna questions
Are health benefits guaranteed?
No. Outcomes vary between people, and research findings do not guarantee a particular result.
Does sauna replace exercise or medical treatment?
No. Sauna does not replace exercise, prescribed treatment, or professional medical advice.
Will one rental produce the benefits described in studies?
Not necessarily. Many studies examined repeated use or long-term habits rather than one rental session.
Do these findings apply to every sauna?
Not necessarily. Traditional sauna, infrared sauna, and other heat treatments differ.
